Action Against Hunger
Feast is proud, for the second year, to be ambassador for the international humanitarian charity – Action Against Hunger, and its support couldn’t be more appropriate as the fundraising, through restaurants, chefs and ambitious dining related initiatives is expanding in the South and South West – two regions that are being targeted to acquire more on-going support. This is where we come in – within the pages of two Feast publications over 60 exceptional restaurants have been reviewed and the good word of Action Against Hunger has been spread...
The charity focuses on great food, and great chefs and through their work they illuminate the stark facts about worldwide hunger. A little known fact for you – more children die every year through hunger related disease than die of HIV, Malaria and TB put together!
In 2016, Action Against Hunger partnered with a hugely successful Taste of London event (the tenth Taste to date) raising £58,000 and its Fine Wine Auction raised a staggering £338,641! And further to this more than 400 UK restaurants took part in the annual ‘Love Food Give Food’ campaign, which is now regarded as the charity’s most successful promotion, and one that sees diners add a discretionary £1 to their bill throughout the months of September and October.
More of the humbling work that is undertaken by Action Against Hunger in over 50 countries worldwide; in parts of North-eastern Nigeria, where some families have been facing famine conditions, it has provided them with safe drinking water, emergency shelter, essential relief items, food, and emergency health and nutrition services to help them
overcome the most desperate of times.
It is continuing to take life-saving treatment to increasingly vulnerable communities in con ict-ridden situations worldwide, including South Sudan, Central African Republic and Yemen.
How can we help? Well, obviously participate in any of the fundraising activities and events – including Auction Against Hunger, Taste of London, Love Food Give Food and perhaps as a restaurateur you could host fundraising evenings or pop ups – and as a foodie – look to see if your favourite haunts are supporting Action Against Hunger – they’d be in very good company as Ken Hom, Raymond Blanc, Gordon Ramsay, Cyrus Todiwala, Francesco Mazzei and Valentine Walker are all ambassadors and some of their restaurants add a small donation to a best-selling dish on their menu year round to raise funds. For example Carluccio’s has raised more than £1.2 million to date by donating 50p from each sale of their popular Penne Giardiniera dish and Hawksmoor adds 50p to their dessert of the month...
Feast spreads the word to its partners, chefs and through its launch functions, and its very own editor may even run the odd marathon or two for the worthy cause...
