Restaurant Roots
You know you’re on to a good thing when a restaurant is being talked about by the best in the business.
Roots is a restaurateur’s restaurant, in terms of its reputation and from the turnover of celebrity chefs that are visiting to eat what all the fuss is about.
From the outside one is welcomed by a façade more akin to Knightsbridge. Inside there’s minimal fuss or distraction allowing owner/chef Jan to take centre stage with his exceptionally progressive and exciting  ve and seven-course taster ‘Discovery’ dinner menus, alongside a vegetarian taster alternative, lunches, and his inimitable Sunday roast.
In a matter of months, Jan and his wife, award-winning pastry chef Stacey, have created one of the South’s, if not the country’s,  nest restaurants.
For dinner go for the seven courses. Don’t be afraid of cost, as you’re away at under £55, and this can morph into a delightful eight courses if the cheeses tempt...
Breads come as a welcome treat – all home-made and deliciously warm, salty butter – a super start. Take the wine  ight to accompany each course from maître ‘d Geza or stick with a universally able wine as we did with a Cecilia Beretta Veneto Soraie Da Uve Leggermente Passite.
Canapés, with a glass of Prosecco (inclusive), arrive – enticing crispy vegetables to crunch in a crumbly ‘smoking garden’ and dive into a creamy hummus.
Jan pops in and out of his kitchen to serve some of the more elaborate dishes – it’s a treat to see him and hear his accounts.
The Scottish scallop Caesar – baby gem lettuce with scallop cream, a soft roasted scallop nestling in the crunch of the salad with a salty twist –
