was probably one of the most delectable shellfulls we have tasted. The country style cooked with bacon and cream was a close second – we are converted!
Other starters of scallops, Cornish rope grown mussels, crispy fried curry spiced sprats, and smoked mackerel (smoked by Nigel, as is all the smoked produce on the menu) are tempting. However, after the pre-starter, generous breads, and our new favourite starter of the Oysters Italiano, we regretfully refrain and instead cunningly order the sh stew, which handily boasts most of these other delicacies; brill, mussels, squid, cockles, tomato and basil in a shell sh stock – a veritable feast... beautiful with a glass of Viognier 2011 Domaine Preignes Le Vieux.
The crab is a must – out with the paraphernalia and on with the bib – we spend an hour hammering, snapping, and poking our way through a ‘whole crab to crack’, just fabulous. We order a bottle of Chablis 2010 Cuvée Prestige, Domaine St Marc (Brocard), which allows the avoursome crab to shine through, a side salad, and order the hand cut twice-cooked chips for good measure...
The menu is thoughtful and adds notes of longer cooking times from fresh, and absenteeism of favourites due to foul weather at sea. It also o ers mini desserts – predictably as one will be overindulged at this stage and an incentivised discounted port to go with local cheeses.
Nigel is invariably on hand – sharing his time between the Crab House Café and Billy Winters over the road. He is a charming man with much to share in terms of his inimitable knowledge of seafood and his relentless pursuit of excellence and fairness above and below the waves.
